Continuity of mind and life

Bruineberg, Kiverstein and Rietveld cite Thompson (2007) for the continuity of mind and life. They argue that the free-energy principle applies first to whole embodied living systems, not to brains or knowing agents alone. On that basis they point to an overlap between the principle and the enactive approach1.

Use in bioelectric cognition

Ciaunica, Shmeleva and Levin cite Thompson (2007) when they describe cognition as serving the physical, biochemical and bioelectrical processes of a self-organizing organism3. They cite the same work, with Levin and Dennett (2020), for tracing interactions between autonomous systems “all the way from cell to society”2. In both places the book supports a framing, not a measurement.
