Leo Buss

Later authors cite it as a source on the evolution of individuality and on the major evolutionary transitions1. Others use it for the idea of the individual as a unit of selection and evolutionary change5. Some cite it for multicellular organisation34.

Cited for evolutionary transitions

Watson and colleagues list Buss (1987) among the works on the major evolutionary transitions. They describe how evolution repeatedly created new units at successive scales of organisation1. They also say that work on transitions in individuality is motivating a new research programme within evolutionary biology2.

02

Individuality as a unit of selection

Krakauer and colleagues survey definitions of individuality. One of them treats the individual as a unit of selection and evolutionary change, and Buss (1987) is the first work cited for it5. Their own paper proposes an information-theoretic account of individuality.

03

Multicellularity and adaptation

Newman reviews approaches to organisation and integration in multicellular forms. He calls the main treatments adaptationist. They stress suppressing conflict between genetically heterogeneous cells, which leads to a unicellular bottleneck in development3.
