Model organisms and the construction of epistemic keys in basal cognition
Rorot (2026) argues that philosophy has mostly studied established model organisms and the inferences drawn from them, while choices made when a new organism enters a field already fix representational commitments.78 Rorot takes basal cognition as a case.8

Building behavioural platforms
Blackiston and colleagues (2010) built a system for automated training and quantitative behavioural analysis. They described it as readily applicable to Xenopus, planaria, zebrafish and similar model organisms in any laboratory.1 They also held that molecularly tractable model organisms promise the greatest insight into cognitive function.2 Lobo, Beane and Levin (2012) made a parallel case for regeneration. They called the planarian an excellent opportunity for model-building, formalization and computational methods for automated model discovery, and said the approach could extend to other regenerative organisms such as hydra, axolotl, Xenopus, newt and zebrafish.3
Measurements across species
Later papers report measurements in particular organisms and compare across them. Morokuma and colleagues (2017) concluded that exposure to space had very long-lasting effects in planaria, spanning physiological, behavioural, morphological and microbiological changes.4 The results of Stratford and colleagues (2019) suggest that proliferative and growth-inhibited cells respond differently to an identical electrical stimulus. They say the results also suggest that this difference in response dynamics is common to the two phylogenetically distant model organisms they studied.5 Kapsetaki and colleagues (2025) argued that their data make hydra the first model system for whole-body bioelectric imaging.6
Representational commitments and keys
Rorot (2026) addresses a gap in the philosophy of model organisms. Existing work centres established organisms and the justification of inferences to other species.7 Rorot argues that representational commitments are set already when an organism is introduced or adopted in a new research area.7 The practices involved in developing a novel model organism, or extending one to new domains, have in this view been overlooked.8 The article's title frames the task as looking for keys in model organisms, with basal cognition as the case.8
Synthesis across systems
Desoyer and colleagues (2026) combine evidence from different systems in their own review. They say this lets them identify conserved bioelectric features of malignancy and gives a basis for quantitative comparison and translational use.9
