What the held texts say about it
Friston (2013) credits Feynman with introducing variational free energy, originally to solve difficult integration problems in path integral formulations of quantum physics. Friston notes that the same free-energy bound is used extensively in approximate Bayesian inference (variational Bayes). He builds on it to describe the dynamics of internal and active states as a gradient descent on free energy, with internal states parametrizing Bayesian beliefs about external states. The other held works do not discuss this book.
Variational free energy was introduced by Feynman [35] to solve difficult integration problems in path integral formulations of quantum physics.
