The held works cite Hille (2001) as a general reference for basic ion-channel and membrane-potential concepts, not for any specific finding. Bonzanni et al. use it for the definition of the resting membrane potential as the voltage where net ionic currents are zero, and for the idea that channels, pumps and transporters set it, regulated by voltage, ligands, or both. Baluška and Levin cite it for bioelectric fields arising from ion dynamics at membranes through channels and transporters.
The resting membrane potential (RMP) represents the voltage at which the net ionic currents across the membrane are zero (Hille, 2001).

The RMP is set and controlled by a repertoire of ion channels, pumps, transporters and junction proteins, whose activities are usually regulated by voltage, ligands, or both (Hille, 2001).

Most of these bioelectrically active systems are based on ion dynamics at membranes which modify bioelectric fields via activities of ion channels and transporters (Taylor, 1974; Wayne, 1993, 1994; Hille, 2001).
