Du Bois-Reymond describes the 1840 Essai as Matteucci's compilation of his papers on animal electricity. He credits Matteucci with seeing the importance of Nobili's frog-current and the inadequacy of earlier theories. Its chief advance was showing that the frog-current does not require Galvani's preparation. He cites the book, which reprints Matteucci's 1838 paper, in disputing Matteucci's claims about muscle current during tetanus and about the frog-current being peculiar to the frog.
In 1840, Signor Matteucci published at Paris a compilation of his papers on Animal Electricity, under the title: " Essai sur les Phenomenes electriques des Animaux.
