The artificial life motto

Levin calls 'life as it can be' Langton's motto for the artificial life community1. He uses it as the sister concept for 'mind-as-it-can-be', a framework for comparing very different kinds of intelligence whatever their composition or origin2. The passages quote the motto and cite the overview. They do not describe Langton's own experiments or arguments in any detail.

Use in Levin's 2019 paper

In a 2019 paper Levin cites Langton (1995) together with Walker and Davies (2013). He asks whether Scale Free Cognition will prove a useful way to organize what is known about the mechanisms and algorithms of life and life-as-it-could be3. He also ties Langton's theme to the problem of boundaries. Deciding what part of a complex biosphere counts as one individual is, he writes, an important problem for research in Life as it Could Be4. Finding a system's functional set points bears on this and on open questions in exobiology and artificial life5.
