What the held texts say about it
The held works cite Langton (1995) for the motto of the artificial life community, "life as it can be" (also written "Life as it Could Be"). Levin uses it as a model for his own aim of studying "mind-as-it-can-be" in TAME. He also uses it to frame questions about where a self's boundary lies and how to communicate with unfamiliar life forms. He treats it as a research programme, not an argued claim.
a sister concept to Langton’s motto for the artificial life community—“life as it can be”
