František Baluška
Baluška worked on cognition in organisms without brains. With Calvo, they asked what properties justify calling eukaryotes minimally intelligent1. With Levin, they surveyed memory and sensing in aneural systems under a functional definition2. With Miller and Reber, they argued that single cells have a basal consciousness grounded in subcellular structures4.

Minimal cognition defined
Calvo and Baluška (2015) set out to identify the behavioural and biological properties that warrant ascribing a form of minimal intelligence to eukaryotes1. Baluška and Levin (2016) reused that definition and called it purely functional and minimalist. They said they were not claiming human-type consciousness or addressing the hard problem2. Later authors cite the 2016 paper for the point that cells and other aneural systems sense their environment through specific sensors6.
Cytoskeleton and cellular consciousness
Baluška and Levin named the cytoskeleton as one of the best candidates for information processing inside a single cell3. The 2021 paper with Miller and Reber pushed this further. It described microtubules as memristors able to decode cellular fields, and argued that single bacterial and archaeal cells show a basal proto-consciousness45. This is a stronger claim than the 2016 functional stance.
Reception in the field
Rosciglione (2026) lists Baluška among the most influential figures arguing that plants integrate signals, learn and remember without a central brain7. Fábregas-Tejeda and Sims (2025) offer a criticism of the wider basal cognition literature. They note that in a Philosophical Transactions special issue, a Baluška and Mancuso article mentions convergent evolution only briefly8.
